HB 402 Restrict Assault Weapons and Large Magazines in NM

UPDATE - It appears that this terrible bill will finally make it to a committee hearing on Thursday, Feb 21, 2012 in the afternoon.  So if you haven't written them yet, please do so.  It will be heard in the House Consumer and Public Affairs committee on Thursday.  We need to stop it here!  So we would like to have you in Santa Fe if possible.  Obviously, the dates and times are not necessarily set in stone.  We will update this article again as the date and time firm up.

Representative Easley has introduced HB-402.  Read it HERE.  It would preclude ownership of so called assault weapons and large capacity magazines. The new bill would mandate locks and controls of those items owned before July 1st, 2013 and would restrict use of most of the grandfathered items to gun ranges only.

Assault weapons would be defined under this law as a gun with ANY of the following features:

* folding or telescoping stock
* a second hand-grip such as one mounted under the barrel
* thumbhole stock
* a pistol grip
* bayonet mount
* flash suppressor or muzzle break
* grenade launcher
* shotguns with a fixed capacity greater than 7 shells
* shotguns with detachable magazines
* pistols with a threaded barrel, flash suppressor, or silencer
* semi-auto version of an automatic firearm
and many others

Magazine limit of seven rounds.

This is pretty much a copy of the NY bill.

Read HB 402 for yourself HERE.

It is currently in the NM House Consumer and Public Affairs committee.

Please send all of the members an email about how you feel.
